Grigri 2 vs. Trango Cinch

I have only used the grigri2 twice, but thought paying out slack was easy. The benefits of the smaller cam lobe is that even if the belayer panics and tries to hold it open in a fall, they will NOT be able to.

Are you kidding me? Seriously? How about if they grab the whole device to hold it open? Pinching the top and bottom would make it VERY easy for a beginner to hold it open.

I'm not saying it is just as easy as the original to hold open, but you have to be pretty fucking stupid to believe you CAN'T hold it open.

I'm a little late to this shindig (was googling for grigri2 reviews) and this popped up.

I've been using the cinch for a little over a year.

Cinch pros:
-----------------

• Easy to pay out slack safely. The way it clamps down when it catches a fall is what made me really enjoy the thing. It'll even engage while paying out slack.
• Handles different sizes of ropes similarly well.

Cinch cons:
---------------

• Lowering smoothly and quickly is a constant challenge. Running the rope through a biner on your leg makes it 200x easier
• Someone else mentioned it, but after taking a whipper it can be a bitch to get some slack in the line.

I'm looking forward to trying out a grigri2 as well.

Cinch good w/ less than 10mm.

Grigri 2 problematic when jumping taking up slack (jugging up), often the rope slides off the lobe under the plate to one side. Not a safety issue really, belayer might fall down because the rope doesn't flow through grigri as expected. This happens almost every time i jug someone up with diameters between 8.9 (used frequently) to 10.

I think and feel the Cinch is easier to misuse than the grigri 2. If the belayer does override the locking mechanism the rope runs in a straight line through the device, whereas the rope has to bend to run through the grigri, slowing it down and giving the belayer more time to correct their error. It is easier to feed slack with the Cinch than any other device when using the proper technique. I loved belaying with my cinch, but found that I didn't feel comfortable being belayed with it.

I use the click-up and like it. I have found however that if the carabiner attached to the device becomes cross loaded (which seems to happen a lot) the click-ups auto-blocking function can fail as it gets blocked from twisting and "locking" by the carabiner. Even so there is still plenty of friction so that it functions as well as an ATC.

On an additional note a locker with a clip to keep it from spinning would prevent this.

I've never seen the issues cited here with either clickup or grigri2. Why is the rope derailing funny with the grigri2? Do you have an issue with a regular atc crossloading the biner? The clickup is just a an atc w/ autoblock.

I never have any trouble with an ATC spinning the biner. I think it is the large size of the click up that does it. I have had the auto block function not work on three different occasions while lead belaying. I still like the click up a lot. Enough to buy the very gimiky looking alpine up.
As I said before as long as you have a special biner with the clip it does not spin.
