Grigri 2 vs. Trango Cinch

Post by climb2core »

Currently have a grigri and I am consdering getting grigri 2 or the Cinch. I was looking for insight from people with personal experiences with both. The most important factor to me is safety. Does one have a design that would tend to have less room to facilitate belayer error? ie. loading, feeding, auto-locking, etc.

Thanks...

No belay device can help you if you're retarded. If saving you from a stupid belayer is what you're looking for, then you're looking for something that doesn't exist.

I am sure the Cinch is safe. However, I sucked at paying out slack and lowering with the Cinch. Maybe with time you could perfect it but the learning curve was shorter with the GriGri.

Most of the accidents I've seen/herd of involved the Cinch including the designer of said device. But that being said there have been accidents with the gri gri too. Get the new gri gri. I've herd its baller

I heard bad belayers are more prone to belayer error. IMO if you feel the need to ask about device "safety", it would be at least as important to re-evaluate who you're climbing with..take it or leave it, but it pays to be picky. Ultimately these devices increase the rate of accidents because they encourage complacency and reliance on technology versus solid skills and paying attention the whole time. That said, GriGri2 or Cinch for thin ropes, GG2 is easier to use but that says zero about "safety." Keep a hand on the brake strand and the question becomes meaningless--anything else is improper belaying.

I have been using the GriGri 2 for a couple of weeks now with no problem. The new 2 speed lowering works great and the smaller size feels really nice. Never used the Cinch, but compared to the first GriGri is very smooth.
