personally I think anything thinner than 9.8 is not a good idea if you are sport climbing with a grigri.
I agree with this and want to add that I suggest that it's better that you're very experienced with a gri (and have caught many surprised -not controlled and prepared - falls) if you're going below 10 mm.
Also, trust me on this one - lowering someone considerably heavier than me on a thin rope is a bitch.

i use a 9.2 with a gri gri and wouldn't recommend it. BUT if you have a belay glove and use the gri gri almost like an ATC, as in keep your break hand on at all times, then it seems to work well. lowering does suck really badly so i would also say maybe buy one of those crazy petzle biners that have the little wire gate thing on the side for lowering. Said had one and it makes lowering pretty nice.
If you are going to use something with a 9.4 you might want to check out a Trango Cinch. I've been using one for a while now with good results. I havn't gone with a small rope, but the Cinch has been reviewed down to a 9.2.
this is more of a hypothetical question for me - i'm getting a discounted rope so i have limited options. i want a 9.8 dry/bi-color - but i can get a 9.8 dry OR a 9.8 bi. the 10.2 & the 9.4 both come dry/bi. wasn't originally planning on considering a 9.4 - just want to know if it would work for what i want.
I belay w/a gri-gri bec 3 or 4 of the boys i climb with outweigh me by a significant amount. Catching them and/or working projects with them is better w/a gri-gri for me.
Meadows, good point about lowering!
Monkey Boy, hadn't considered the cinch - but i'm too cheap to buy a new device when the one i have now is in perfectly good condition.

petzl gave me and my buddy one of the fancy grigri biner thingys(I insisted this meant I was a sponsored petzl athlete but he wasn't buying it). I have a 9.8 and with a heavy person they are nice for lowering.
