Sport climbing in south Arizona

Post by toad857 »

Anyone know anything about it? I'll be living in SE Arizona near the Santa Catalina mtns, Mt. Lemmon, near Summerhaven. Was hoping someone could save me some time & point me to the good sport crags. Thanks.

Well, you're at the best place. Mt. Lemmon is pretty good. I thought the grades were pretty stiff, and the rock type, whatever it is, is slick as snot. Get that Squeezin' the Lemon guidebook.
I've had just about enough of this shit.

Mt. Lemmon is nice. You can climb there pretty much year round. When it's cold, you stay at lower elevation. If it's warmer, you just go a little higher up the mountain. The rock is pretty good quality too. It can be a little difficult to find routes sometimes.

Hey Toad:

Check out this site for all the beta you need. Also, it is probably a good place to look for partners.

There are some decent climbs on Mount Lemmon. The texture of the granite ranges from water polished slickness to OMFG finger-eating ridiculousness.

The climbing, while abundant overall, is spread out in small not-so-concentrated areas. For my money, the best place to get out and climb is La Milagrossa Canyon. For the 5.11 leader this place offers non-brutalizing texture, decent route density, and an awesome canyon setting. This is also the spot for harder steeper climbing (5.12-5.13).

For more info hit up the free bouldering and sport guides for the Tucson area @ http://math.fullerton.edu/tmcmillen/

Oh, and make sure you get on Steve's Arete @ Windy Point. Pretty rad exposure for a 35' sport route.

I was only there for a weekend, and didn't have a rope, but there are 2-3 decent bouldering spots around tuscon.
