Finding a dry route on a rainy day
Finding a dry route on a rainy day
me and some buddies are headed to red river gorge around the 11th of march and this being my first time there i was hoping someone who knows the area could give some beta on dry crag's, roof coverage, or maybe surrounding foliage that allows for a good route in the rain or after the rain. trad or sport. i'm used to new river gorge and it seems to always be moist there so any beta on weather this time of year at red river would help me better plan our climbs. thanks...Guy

Like me on facebook but hate me in real life
Torrent is great during rainy days - the stuff to the right is usually completely dry including dry belay ground (and the approach has stairs!) I've been to the Unlode once when it was rainy and that wasn't bad...but there's only four or so climbs if I remember right. All the stuff anticlimber mentioned is good....it just depends on the level you climb. have fun!

One of the best night's sleep I've ever had was camped in the Gorge when it was... dewing heavily. An air mattress, a tent and... heavy dewfall combined... I was trying to read and got through one page after I got settled before I had to let go. That was the first time I visited the Gorge before I had climbed (bc).marathonmedic wrote:What are you people talking about? It doesn't rain at the Red. 65 inches last year! A local rainfall record. And this year started off with a bang with almost twice the normal precipitation in January. February was looking fairly dry until this morning when the mother of all cells squated over the Red and let loose.
Sorry for the rant, but we've been trying to put in a road since last June, and just about the time it starts to dry out enough to continue, another monsoon hits. Mark Meyer told us that last year the rain really cut into his via Ferrata business.
Better wear your knee-high boots to slog through this "heavy dew."
