I just thought I'd give you all the heads up. I am leading a climbing class from my college to the red this weekend.
We will be climbing at Pistol ridge on saturday, and pebble beach on sunday.
these areas were specificlly chosen so we wouldn't be tieing up popular areas, but I still thought I'd give you the heads up.
we will be 11 or 12 people, and due to the god da## fuc#### liability we can not allow others to climb on the school ropes.
I will try to keep from having more than 2 ropes up at a time, but never the less, it is a whole lot of people

I thought I heard Wes mention once that colleges are suppose to get special permits to climb on FS land but usually don't, anyone know if this is true?

I thought it was something about guides. Ex. you take more than like 8(?) people out you are a guide and have to have a guide permits and such.
(Since I only take like 2-3 friends out I don't worry about it)

then leading a climbing class would be considered a guide right?

I think it's pretty cool that you gave a warning. Nice.

btw i'm not trying to stir up trouble and maybe you have the various permits but I was wondering for others out there that might be taking a large group out.

Not sure Mia. Not a lawyer nor do I have any idea what the rules are. So it may be that if you teach a climbing class and you take the class outdoors you are a guide and have to have the permits (if any, Wicked Tribe you know?).
It could just come down to how anal people want to be on the wording of the rules.

Strum, the heads up is very cool of you. If you haven't already, you need to contact the Stanton Ranger District about a permit. I'm not sure of the restrictions on group size, but I know there is a modest fee associated if your group is a certain size. The DBNF climbing rules state to limit group size to no more than 4-6 climbers. You can contact them at 606-663-2852.
Also, please educate your group on the following:
Pack It In, Pack It Out
All food wastes, including fruit cores and peels, should be carried out.
Please pick up trash when you find it. Discarded tape and cigarette butts are unsightly, so consider bringing a small plastic bag in your pack for trash.
Properly dispose of what you can't pack out
Use toilets where available.
If toilets aren’t available, urinate away from vegetation, climbing routes, streams and trails.
Dispose of solid human waste in a "cathole" at least 200 feet away from trails, the bases of climbs, water sources, or campsites; carry your own trowel for this reason.
Pack out your toilet paper in resealable plastic bags.
The above is from
http://www.southernregion.fs.fed.us/boone/rockclimb.htm where more guidelines can and should be reviewed with new climbers.

The NFS doesn't require a permit for a group under 75 people. <--- Jackson Falls beta. This might very from area to area.
