Attention new users registering with AOL accounts

Post by ray »

AOL is really cracking down on who they receive email from.
They are strictly denying any email sent from servers that do not have a static IP address.

This means if you register as a new user and provide an AOL email address, you will never receive the account activation email sent from my server. This also means that current users will not get Topic Reply Notifications and Private Message Notifications if you are using an AOL address.

If you experience this, please email me and I will manually activate your account.

I am currently looking into a service that will allow me to route my mail through a server with a valid static IP address to alleviate this problem.

Ray, can we set it up on my ISP? I have a static IP address. I can create an email address just for the site. Let me know.

Probably not. You would have to talk your ISP into letting me relay through them. I may be able to relay through my server at work.
Here's what I'm looking at now (this company does my dynamic DNS for me):

my ISP won't do shit for me, but I was thinking we might be able to use my ISP's SMTP server to send the email... somehow. :?

Well, they have to allow another domain to relay through them. There's no way they would allow that. The service (tzo) is only 50/year so I'll probably just do that.

Well, I'm happy to say that AOL and Netscape email account holders can now receive email from the site. This includes Topic Reply Notifications, Private Message Notification, and new account registration verification emails.

Well, you selected to "Notify me when a reply is posted" or "Watch this topic for replies" so that's what you're getting. Either go into each subject and select "Stop watching this topic" or block the email address.
