Broken BD Cam

Post by Josephine »

Greg fell on my BD .1 cam & it pulled. When i looked at it afterwards, i noticed the cam stop sheared off on the far right-hand side.

Has this happened to anyone else? Thoughts? Comments?

.1 is itty bity - and if it broke that part - it means it wasn't placed well. Aliens, and a couple others don't even have cam stops - so the cams just umbrella if you place them poorly. Or, as sometimes happens - you place behind a flake, fall, the flake expands, the cam tips out and umbrellas, then rips out.

Personally, I would still use it, as the cam stops don't add to the pull out strength, just there to help if it starts to tip out.

Agreed, and I don't think those cam stops are rated for full strength.

forward the image or gear to Collin P at BD. He would be able to give you a pretty good idea.

The .1 and .2 BD's are single axle units, the double axle design starts with the .3. That is when they get the full strength rating in the full open position from BD.

The cam broke when the lobes umbrella'ed past one of the stops. Due to this sudden asymmetric insult, the axle may no longer have rotational symmetry. The asymmetry may decrease the cam's performance. I would engage and disengage the lobes make sure that one side does not appear to swivel at all. I'd be cautious. Wes' logic sounds good though.
