Sadly, there are no belay techniques or equipment so simple that it's impossible to screw up. In the stitch plate era I was forever seeing belayers take their brake hand off the rope when taking in slack. It was a simple error in technique and it drove me crazy. People did it only because it was easier than doing it the right way. I see things haven't changed much.
As others have suggested, educate yourselves in the proper use of all climbing equipment and hold those around you to high standards. And while you might hurt some feelings by pointing out dangerous habits, consider the alternative if you don't.
