Keenan,
While it is your right to not get along with whoever you choose, you should at least be thankful that the 35,000 user visits or so a year at Muir are not descending on the crags where you climb. Muir is plays an integral part of the Red, and anyone not willing to appreciate that it is just sticking their head in the sand.
i am glad that all those folks are not climbing at the same cliff as me at the same time! my feeling is that they would not be climbing at many of the same crags i'm at regardless of muir being in operation or not. obviously, some climbers would trickle over and some of the moderates on FS land would get raped, but i don't think it would be this opening of the flood gates phenomenon.
of course muir plays an integral role in making the red what it is today and anyone who can't see that indeed has their head in the sand. i do not, however, appreciate the role it plays (due mainly to the way it's managed). i have always said that anyone who opens their land up to free climbing/recreation is doing an amazing thing and think rick and liz will be remembered as doing a great thing long after most of this bs has been forgotten. i respect their land, their wishes, and their right to do with it what they please. i think everyone should donate in any way what they can. i have always played by the rules and used to help out with trail days and such.
it's not that i am not willing to appreciate the role muir plays it's just that i don't believe it plays a good one and respect my right raise hell. the overarching tone from the webers has been spiteful, vindictive, holier than thou, and passive aggressive and with all the masses kissing their asses on the internet a figure i dissenting voice or two should be thrown out there.
don't worry ian, i'll get tired of fighting the uphill battle and will shrink into the shadows with all the other like minded voices eventually.
