I assumed the original poster had talked to Mark personally to give such information that he was thinking about closing down Torrent after his dog was attacked by some thoughtless people with a long dog leash, etc... Where did this story come from anyway considering it doesn't remotely jive with what actually happened? I'm curious what you'll say when you give Mark the money? "I made up a story on the Internet and some folks felt sorry for you... here's the money for vet bills that you already turned down by the folks ( that already made the situation ok weeks ago) who owned the dog that tried to eat your toothless dog."

A bit of RRG trivia, the name of the route Perforator @ Long Wall is from a dog bite that occurred during the FA.

I'm sure the dog's owners must feel terrible about what happened. From what Meadows has posted, they absolutely did the right thing when it happened - which is great to hear. It is every responsible dog owner's worst nightmare that their dog will hurt someone or another dog. Unfortunately, just when we think we know our dogs, a new situation could easily arise and teach us that we have more to learn.

"A group of climbers got together to give you a little offering that expresses our sympathy for what happened with your woofer and appreciation for all that you do for climbers."

Since Spragwa isn't here to answer this, I'll take a stab at it. As I understand it (from Sprag), she was told the story exactly as she posted it from someone she trusted who did speak directly to Mark about the incident. Clearly something was lost in the translation by the person she spoke to. Honest mistake. Fortunately, everything has been worked out and that is all that matters. Also, I'm still blown away by how everyone has come together to take care of a person we all know and respect! I would have loved to contribute, but I've had a sick dog running up multi-thousand dollar vet bills for over a month now. If anyone wants to help out...

I find it hard to believe that *anyone* would get angry about collecting money for an injured dog. The dog is owned by a family that owns one of the best crags in the Red. A climber's dog injured their dog. Some climbers feel bad about that so they want to show their appreciation.

If anyone feels threatened by this action, they have serious fucking issues.

As I see it, two positive things resulted from this:
1. The guy was made aware that his dog hurt Mark's dog and the situation was resolved.
2. There was a fund started and donations received that I think will show an effort to maintain a strong relationship with Mark and show our sympathy to his situation.

This has been a GOOD thing!

Folks can argue that "it wasn't a mauling it was a bite" and that "the leash was long...no it was short". The fact is, Mark's dog was jumped by a leashed dog on his property, wounds resulted, and Mark was upset with the situation. The way I see it, it's not about the guy and his dog's feelings. It's about Mark, his dog, and the climbing community's feelings for them.

If Mark feels bad about taking the money, buy him a couple of ducks (to replace the unfortunate ones) and toss the rest in the wishing well. He shouldn't feel bad about climbers trying to give something back to a family that has given so much.

I am glad everything worked out.
Now, what is the next topic we can tear into based on 2d and 3rd hand information?! Then those of us who overreact can have something new to make amends for.
