I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a full frontal lobotomy.
Overhung, I have the stuff to make wine with. We could use your basement or you could just get a ziploc bag and make hooch.

Call me crazy, but maybe Overhung should try Manischewitz kosher wine - to 'wine drinkers' it's notoriously bad, but it might be more along the lines of 'kool-aid', plus it's cheap. Some other crazy stunts to try would be adding a little salt or sugar to the wine. Adding salt is an old-school 'hack' from back when bad wine was really, really bad. (Personally, I think that adding sugar to a red wine would be gross, but then, I like red wine and I'm not 'drinking it under doctor's orders'!)

Everyone has been suggesting inexpensive Aussie Shirazes and Shiraz blends, but that may be sort of the opposite of 'kool-aid'. These wines have lots of 'bang for the buck' that red wine likers, uh, like. They are made to be fairly big, with a fair amount of tannins, acidity, fruit/berry and peppery-ness and they are often 'accelerated' in terms of adding as much oak flavor as possible (I've heard that some mfrs run the wine through wood chips to imitate longer barrel aging.) These may be the opposite of what you're looking for.

I think you're looking for 'light bodied' and either 'off dry' or 'slightly sweet' reds. You might try some eastern European reds if you can find them, like Hungarian, former Yugoslavian, Greek or even Turkish reds.

Okay, a little off topic but related.
Overhung, why does your doctor want you to drink red wine?

an excerpt from my nutrition book...

"..the science on wine and health is mixed.
For example, the high potassium
content of grape juice may lower high blood
pressure, and potassium persists when the
grape juice is made into wine. Since alcohol
in large amounts raises blood pressure,
however, the grape juice may be more suitable
than the wine for people with hypertension.
Dealchoholized wine also facilitates the
absorption of potassium, calcium, phosphorus,
magnesium and zinc. So does wine, but the
alcohol in it promotes the quick excretion
of these minerals, so the dealcoholized
version is preferred.

In additoin to alcohol, wine contains
flavonoids that are under study as protectors
against events tha re thought to trigger heart
disease. An antioxidant effect of flavonoids
in wine has been offered as an explanation for
why wine-drinking French and other Mediterranean
peoples have lower incidence of heart disease
despite having many other risk factors. Compared
with other food sources such as onions or other
vegetables, though, wine may deliver only small
amounts of antioxidant flavonoids to the
body. In addition, alcohol itself increases
oxidation in the body."

I know this is just one text but I thought it interesting.

so there are many ways to get the benifits without drinking wine, is that what yer saying VA? that takes away our justification though.

oh yeah, the same people who whine about the political threads on a climbing board will post here....just thought it funny.
