so, is the road off 11 north of the ashland camp loop road and between the ashland road endpoints usable as an approach/parking?

Look at the map. We don't own that land and there is no parking area there. There is a tract of WMA there (hunting only), but the majority of the rock that far northwest is not within MFRP. You could probably park off 11 and bushwhack into the Miller Fork drainage but I wouldn't recommend it.

Driving up the main drainage on hell creek rd is the only "legitimate" access point. Try not to get stuck, and as Kipp said have 4wd... I also recommend comprehensive insurance.

A subaru will get you in, to a certain point, if the water is low, but you will probably occasionally bottom out. A real 4wd is recommended with decent clearance. Also pay attention to the weather report for the day. If the weather calls for potential pop up storms you may not want to drive in. The creek is deep enough when there is no rain and becomes impassable (unless you have a mega rig with snorkel) after even short stints of heavy rain. You would be stuck in there for a while as one day we parked short and on the way out waded waist deep in fast moving current. Don't know many vehicles that can go through waist deep water.

Lastly don't smash the side of your vehicle against a tree when your tire goes in a pot hole. Good luck.

if the widow makers are stones sounds like a fun job, or chainsawed stumps (loose?)?
