Myke mentions the trusted university outdoor program experience. I'm not sure what there is locally, but for over 20 years the University of Iowa had a great course run by the leader of the old Iowa Mountaineers club. This group has a 60+ year tradition od safety, much like that of the old Chicago Mountaineers of old. Peruvian Andes, New Zealand Alps, real Alps, many big mountain trips over the dedaces. Safety course very well done, as it was more about safety and belay technique than climbing itself. It's a shame that those who ran it back in the 80's are now out of the business.
