How did you learn climbing safety techniques?

How did you learn safety techniques for outdoor climbing, from a friend, from a guide service, from a book, etc.?

We have 38 people who have answered the poll about where they started to climb, indoors or outdoors, but only 30 who answered this poll about how they learned safety techniques. Did 8 of you never learn safety techniques?

I meant for people to answer both polls so I could get an even sample.
