remember, no one is trying to tell good ole aaron how to live his life..if I remember correctly, aaron started this thread asking for advice...

he had it coming...now it is up to him to decide what to discard, and what to apply...

rhunt, "live your own life" sounds so good in theory, but as you and I have discussed, these same "free spirits" are the owns who want a government program for everything under the sun...somebody has to work to pay for these programs..any clues on who is funding them...yep, the WORKING taxpayers....not the drop outs...so if you use the federal highway system to get to your roadtrip destination, thank every decent working taxpayer for his contribution to your "free" lifestyle...
but hey, who has time for the details of reality when selfishness is so in vogue...

lol..o youthful exhuberance...

let you in on a secret aaron...right out of college, I lived in colorado and montana and did the "free spirit" thing...in fact, lived in colorado for an entire year, climbing with no job..but I had saved money, and paid for my own apartment.

no need to assume everyones life sucks because they are doggin you. I could easily make the argumant your life sucks, because you don't have any direction or aim, and therefore are using this "climbing thing" as an escape...but start another thread if you want to get into that...

I'm like you, piggy. I played hard in my youth but saved and worked all the while. Shoot, I don't think AK would've been nearly as much fun without the funds for KB and snowboarding. *And* I never got into credit card debt one cent.

aaron - my guess is a lot of people on this board have lived the life that gets you off so maybe you should try to listen to some of the advice offered. I tried to scrimp when I was traveling by dogging camping and trying to get the hook-up on free meals so I'm not going to tell you that you're a bad person for thinking like that. However, I can tell you that by dogging camping I did get *noticed* by rangers that lead to bad things happening (fines, misdemeanors...). Just be cool, try to follow "the rules" and have fun. And most importantly, travel as much as you can!

And BTW, I absolutely love my life without being a full-time climbing bum. I love having money for fun stuff and I enjoy taking trips without having to scrimp. I'm 30 and life just keeps getting better. I'm not saying money makes me happy but it definitely makes playing a lot more fun. :D

Yeah, I found being poor to suck pretty hard. Sitting in your apartment hoping cynergy won't come turn off your power until your next paycheck comes in, eating rice 3x a day, always being a buck short, having to borrow money you know you can't repay, having your phone diconnected, reconnected so many times ( and the associated fee), Not being able to take your girl to a nice place (not even on a special occasion), Getting sick because you can't afford food with protien in it, Having permanant decay in your immune system from going hungry, having your skin get thin cause you can't eat right, being laughed at cause you can't afford decent clothes, not inviting people over so they don't see your poverty and lack of food...

Yeah. Being poor SUCKS.

aaron, while I know your costs will be lower w/o rent, do make sure have enough food. No matter how much fun you are having, remember that going without food can damage your body to the point that it will NEVER recover. And eating just one type of food (100# of rice, or any grain) is really bad, opens you up to wierd 3rd world diseases, like beriberi, and other things that can have permanent effects.
Be careful.

Oh, and please pay for your camping. Skimping on a 5$ a night fee is just rude.
Have fun and eat well!

Well, since I used to be young, and now I'm old; here's my two cents worth.....

Aaron, if you want to be a dirtbag, be a dirtbag! Do whatever you want to make your life happy. Your life; your call. Just don't hurt anyone else in the process.

Now, follow the sound advise about your health, and go have the aforementioned fun.

And by the way, being old is not so bad................
What I love about running is you can meditate while running. It's a peaceful place.

aaron, i am a dirtbag climber who lived at miguels. i think we slacklined together one day. I have been travelling non-stop for a year and half and it has been one of the best times of my life. Almost everyday has been the best day of my life. i keep finding amazing climbing and amazing people everywhere.

however, i worked for a few years after college and saved a lot of money up. i also do some work on my restdays. i don't know what living in the valley is like but if it like the other dirtbag climber havens, you will probably learn alot very quickly and redefine what you want out of your experience. you might also learn interesting ways to fund your lifestyle.

having a car you can sleep in is key for me, becuase that way I almost never need to steal camping, i can always sleep in parking lots. and my budget lets me pay for camping here and there.

anyway, go for it and good luck. i am sure you will have a blast.

just because you took/are taking a class on ethics doesn't mean you're well versed on them. think them through for yourself and make sure they're sound and logical.

make mistakes, yes. but as dipsi said, don't hurt anyone in the process.. anyone.. that includes yourself. or at least make sure any mistakes can be repaired in the (nearish) future.

remember this, too: people are also trying to live their lives the way they choose to, right or wrong. they are just like you in that sense. so don't belittle them or their lives. and by stealing from them (time, space, effort and/or energy) you are detracting from their ability to live the life they want to live. so you are stealing that from them which you are idealizing: a life you wish to lead your own way.

just be smart. use your head. we're all stuck here together so respect us, even if you don't like us.
