I like SCINs as a basic guide.

Additionally I think you should qualify when you tell someone what grade climber you are. IE: I am (by SCIN's definition) a 5.11 sport climber (not trad or alpine or mixed or anthing else; with no problems at the lower end and can send the upper end after a few goes) at the Red River Gorge (location means everything to some) and have just started breaking into the .12s (though I've sent a few .12s at the lower end I by no means present myself as a "5.12 climber" though that is what I am currently working towards).

Just an opinion, as always.

didn't the guy get the message, ro is 5.7, congragulate him for joining me in the ranks of the sub 5.10 climbers, i haven't done ro though, i hear it's real sandbaged for a seven, but that there is some specail beta which will make it .7-, maybe i'll project this fall, and finally join the ranks of 5.7 climbers

If you use the armbars and chickenwings on Ro, its only 5.6

If your SO says, "I want to climb this 5.<whatever>, will you put the rope up for me?"- and your palms start to sweat, you are not a 5.<whatever> climber.

kato, ever tried climbing at the red in the summer? our palms sweat on every climb...new definition.

for a bunch of people who supposedly don't care about grades, this conversation strikes me funny. say it all together now... "we are number chasing posers."

I think that means you are a 5.12 climber by simple osmosis! Way to pick your roommates...

Now this raises the question of the definition of a "handful".

Are we talking about petite girly man hands or burly manly man hands? If you think about it long enough, all sorts of images are conjured up in my mind of what a handful might mean.

If you can put your draw on the first bolt and stand around tied in rehersing the moves on the ground then you've earned the right to tell people you climb the grade.

who the hell cares? if all you are going for is a title of being a 5.whatever climber thats pretty pathetic. do it, send whatever your little hart desires but dont go bosting "oh i'm the shit climber" just because you sent a 5.12, and yea, it is all subjective and relitive to the context, so what the hell? so why dont we get back to climbing and not bosting about all the one 5.12 you sent last weekend, keep it as what its supposed to be.
