What does it take to be a 5."whatever" climber?

Post by One-Fall »

We were climbing at Roadside the other day, and some guy had just sent Ro, and he exclaimed that, "I am finally a 5.12 climber".

My question is, what does it mean to be a 5."whatever" climber? Is there a certain amount of sends you need at that grade? Will one send do it? Onsite the low end, redpoint the high end of the grade?

Any thoughts?
Can't we all just get along?

purest form, several onsights of the hard end of the grade.

reality, redpointed an XXa after having it as a project.

actually I just made this crap up but its something I have been wondering about myself.

To me it is whatever you go out and send on a regular basis in a handful of tries.

IMO, you should be able to onsight, or quickly redpoint in very few attempts, at that grade the majority of the time.

of course, that means i would consider myself a 5.11- sportclimber which, in turn, would cause many that i know to call out "bullshit!" :D

I still don't understand the difference between a flash and a beta flash. So there's no way I'll understand how climbers define themselves. But the handful of tries thing makes sense to me.

Just be a climber! That should be good enough!

Don't worry about trying hard. Just be fat with a resting heart rate of 120, and just have FUN! Yea!
