I am not a developer, or even a user of all these new routes. I'm an old guy that took up the sport late in life and there are plenty of 'established' classics to probably last me the rest of my life.
That said, I do think that this thread should be (has been) the launching point for honest discussion that might result in some action. Seems everyone agrees, only differently. And it also seems that it is the same old bbs that it always is. Rant this, hurt feelings that, you suck, he sucks, she sucks, I suck, oh WTF!
One of the best things to come out of this is a sense of honesty. This is the first time I recall (no I haven't done specific searches) people tagging with their real names. It’s refreshing. The only thing better would be if they put pictures with it, that way if we meet in the gorge we know who every one is. For better or worse.
The BOD is out there, but the exclusive red river climbing club will probably always be that.
And that's OK too. Even if there's no way in hell I'd ever tell a friend of mine to check it out because as soon as I do they'll start reading some thread about douche bags, drinking, corn hole reaming, sack grabbing, fart smelling geezer-ho's and think, 'climbing is all about being a butt-wipe.' And they would completely miss the good parts. No way I'd send my mom or family here, would you?
See, even I rant. Sorry.
Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that I felt this was a worthwhile thread. Even it was simply to unite a bunch of route setters against a troll.
I do think one of the best arguments out there is the maintenance issue. But then again, like every piece of gear you buy, look at the warning. Climbing may result in death. If you tie in, you take the chances. Stupidity is Darwins law. If you get on a route and the first bolt is rusted clean through and the holds are lichen infested, there's your sign. If the setter pays for the hangers and has permission from the owner or trustee to bolt, then they (the setter) should have the say. But if they're smart enough to spot a line, brave enough to put their creativity out there and strong enough to wield the tool, then hopefully they would be wise enough to listen to specific and reasonable criticism when the deed is done.

That is a great post!
(but please, in the future, no real names on the bbs. It sets a bad precedent.)

when I used to climb, I LOVED choss. I will personally kick some ass if choss, especially chossy slabs are chopped. I have a lot of anger to get out of my system so be afraid.
Of course I never believed for a second that the Judge was serious. He got what he wanted, though--upset people and flaming. Reminds me of the good old days. ::sniff::

If relegating this thread to hijacked wasn't enough to kill it, then Freakie Friday should.
I must admit though, it made me chuckle.
Thanks.
