Isn't that the restaurant with all the shit on the walls?
PSh, It is no gyms actual responsibility to make sure you practice good ethics outside. But if you asked us we'd tell you to LNT.

The next day, we were at the 10 wall at Roadside, and a "grown up" couple got on one of the routes. They were in the usual "crowd" - I was over with folks on Jersey or stay the hand. At some point the belayer caught my eye because she was looking down and talking on a phone while belaying with a grigri. Not swift, but not a big deal... Until I saw her paying out rope!
She was on the phone, totally not looking, lead belaying! I don't doubt that the climber was plenty strong and was "just warming up", but still! WTF?!?
She was on a phone ???????? OMG!!!!! did you ask her what phone co. ????? I cant get a signal anywhere

and at what point do you become "experienced?" or not a gumby? We're all "gumbies" to someone else who has more experience.
I guess I haven't had to many bad experiences with 'gumbies" (maybe because I still consider myself one
) I will continue to offer helpful advice and suggestions when i see people doing thigns wrong etc. it's the only way to learn and do it safely.
Relatively speaking, you get "experienced" when you're at the drag and you see somebody doing somethng that ind find to be obviously stupid and/or unsafe.
For me, the useage of the term "gumby" is a shorthand for the party in question. Have you read teh "what makes a gumby thread"?

I think that several years ago people mainly learned to climb by going out with people that already knew what they were doing, yes we all had a gumby phase and did some stupid shit but our experienced friends probably curbed a lot of that. Now a days, it seems that its the shear volume of newbs w/out experienced guids sow up at the crag with nothing but a brand new rope and a set of balls. Sure we were once gumbies but the crags were less crowded back then and our stupidity was not as apparent. The gubies come out in hords in recent years and the impact is obvious. Something must be said if its potentially fucking shit up for the rest of us.

believe it or not, I first went climbing 18 years ago..the mentality towards gumbies was there then, and it is there now. as we get older and have been around the sport (sorry, hobby)...(sorry, pursuit)...(aw, whatever)...have been around climbing longer, we just adopt the entitlement mentality. I was here first, screw all you gumbies. it has very little with what a person knows or does not know as it pertains to climbing, and everything to do with our selfish interests.
besides, if you can't onsight 12a, you're still a gumby at the Red anyway...that is 95% of us.

gumby definition #86: someone dumb enough to finish a route for a non-gumby "experienced" climber who chickened out!
krampus, you know that was always my dream day for that to happen to you, but i had to settle for the pig instead! i'm equally happy nonetheless! sorry piggy, i hope i'm still allowed to come over!
at least i didn't mention the other dirty secret i learned about you.
like i've said before, i'm a gumby for life and DAMN proud of it!!!

tucky you know I would never allow that to happen, I would rather hang from the anchors by my scrotum than let you do that to me. But I doubt I'll ever have to worry about that, even if you are heckling me from the ground, while throwing spiders at me.
