talking to gumbies

Post by Josephine »

you're at the crag and a group of Very Inexperienced Climbers comes along to climb next to you and you notice them doing one of the following:

- top-roping through the chains
- belaying a leader w/gri gri and opening the handle to pay out slack
- going to set up a TR for a friend and about to remove all the directionals on an overhanging sport route
- yelling "take" when they're 10 feet above their bolt on an overhanging route
- bringing a dog to muir (or having it unleashed before 2008)

at what point do you say something and at what point do you just walk away and shake your head?

If they are just going to kill/damage themselves, then I usually just let them do what they want. Because most wont listen anyway. Though, if they seam like nice, but clueless people, then I might step in and offer a little advice.

But, if they are fucking up hardware, then I say something.

definitely say something about the dog thing, because that affects access for everyone. going through the chains to TR is also not so cool. other than that, i usually end up feeling/sounding like a know-it-all, and most people don't want the advice anyway. just let 'em smack into the wall, or try and toprope and not be able to get back on, and they'll eventually figure it out.

If its life threatening or hardware damaging I am agressive, if it will just result in gumby swinging, then I might say something quietly then laugh when they don't listen.

I preemptively remind gumbies of all of the above, even before I see it happen. And then I roundhouse kick them.

Yasmeen is the master at this. She should probably teach a class on how to affectively talk to gumbies that are doing stupid things.

Say somthing!! Always!! Now if you get the Gumby response "go fuck yourself" then you walk on by. But I kinda see it as all climbers responsability to look after one another when we can. But, your responsability ends when they are not receptive (I.E. go fuck yourself). If someone gets hurt in your proximity odds are YOU and those with you are the only ones who truely know what to do. So if you dont say somthing and they get hurt your going to suffer (that is if you care about a bleeding Gumby)

Dont be a dick and they will probably listen.......
