Now that I have thought about it more, I agree with ynp1, this is about the dumbest idea ever.

I belive Warren Zevon said it best, "Send lawyers, guns, and money, the shit has hit the fan". There is no way you could slip this past the government because they always get their cut of the action. Also, there is no reason anyone should have to pay to climb in the Red River Gorge because that's what federal and state taxes are for.

actually i don't think that is the exact warren zevon quote but its close. in general i agree that it isn't a good idea because it would cost so much just to enforce the permit. on the other hand, it might be a good way to open climbing back up at Torrent if they could somehow get around the liability so they didn't have an ass load of insurance. I try not to be an ass on this site although i know many people let loose behind the vail of the internet, and i honestly think ya'll are giving mark way too much negative feedback on the idea. If Torrent were reopened on a mandator fee basis i would be all for it, although i don't know how much i'd climb there because there are other place i can climb for free. maybe one season i'd get a pass, climb everything there and then never come back...maybe

pawilkes, I just listened to the song for verification sake. That is the exact quote.
Warron the Man wrote:I went home with the waitress the way I always do
How was I to know she was with the Russians, too

I was gambling in Havana, I took a little risk
Send lawyers, guns and money, Dad get me out of this.

I'm the innocent bystander but somehow I got stuck
Between a rock and a hard place
And I'm down on my luck.....

Now I'm hiding in Honduras, I'm a desperate man
Send lawyers, guns and money, the shit has hit the fan.
Lawyers, Guns and Money.......
...and this thread is clearly a troll.

tnkz,
mgmt.

I wouldn't pay...that takes away from the spirit of adventure and there are plenty of places to climb for free or discreetly trespass. As long as you're smart then you can avoid paying.

But I agree that for the masses, it's a fantastic idea!

I'm inclined to agree, but the OP wouldn't do that right?

Anyway, the closure wasn't about money in the first place so this wouldn't have the potential to re-open Torrent.

Charlie - evidently it depends on which version of the song you have. the version i have doesn't have that verse in it at all, he just goes on with "Lawyers guns and money" a bunch of times. The line i was thinking of was "Dad, get me out of this". however, my appologies for thinking that the version i knew was the only one.

Sure will get a couple of guys to patrol all the cliffs in Tuesday afternoon to punish all the people without permits with a stern slap on the wrist.
