Hi -- my climbing partner and I will be visiting RRG for the first time next week, and are planning on spending a week down there. We don't have a guidebook, so I was hoping someone could recommend some areas that we might check out the first few days we're there. We are looking to do sport routes in the 5.10 to 5.12 range, so if there are any areas with a couple 10s, tons of high quality 11s and a few 12s that would be ideal.
Also - what's the camping scene there? is Miguel's insanely crowded at weekends? do all climbers camp there or do they camp other places too?
And is it okay to bring dogs to RRG? Thanks!

Miguel's is pretty insane on the weekends this time of year but fun. Depends on what kind of scene you're lookin for. If you want a good night's sleep in quiet surroundings...probably not the best place. If you want to drink beer around a fire...great place.
Dogs are ok as long as they are kept on leashes. Nobody likes crazy dogs barking & stepping all over their rope. And clean up the poo...especially on trails.

Dogs are cool at the crag. I don't keep mine on a leash unless I take her Muir or Torrent or if there are people at the crag who are uncomfortable (then I go somewhere else usually) She's pretty unobtrusive. I guess, just be honest with yourself about your dog's behavior. Be fair and DO NOT bring an aggressive dog to the crag. These aren't rules but it's nice to not worry about being mauled or having my dog mauled.

Yeah, seriously with the cleaning up poop on the trails. After carefully picking up after my dog on the way up to Roadside I stepped in a huge mound on the way back down that some... unnice person... had failed to clean up so I then had to spend many minutes with a stick (there were no convenient puddles at the time) cleaning out my treads and then wiping in the grass then back to the stick. So whoever you are, leave your dog at home.

When my ankle is 100%. I fear that in his excitement, he'll pull me off trail or go speeding down the hill & I'll end up hurt further & then of course, killing him.

I feel your pain. Mine is 70 lbs. of fluff. She's sooo much better about pulling. I also taught her the Oh so hand "wait" trick. When she's off leash I can make her wait for me. Would that work if a squirrel ran by...we don't yet know. : )

I kick my dag, throw her in there nearest bodie of water, then tie her by her feet if she ever does anything wrong. Once i did that a few times she didnt pee on ropes, shit on trail, doesnt bit people to often anymore, or be the village slut. she is a calm little bitch now. all because I beat my little 26 pound fluff of shit.

I would suggest: Torrent, Roadside, Sky Bridge (get on King Me), and the Southern Region (check out Drive By, it's got good stuff). Check out Muir as well, it's a pretty hike and has fun climbs at various levels, but you might want to go there during the week. Military Wall has some classic climbs ranging from 5.9 and up. Damn, we've got a lot of cool climbing here and I'm stuck at work.

hey, I heard rumor that there are some long climbs at RRG that have been recently developed - is it worth bringing a 70m rope, or will a 60 be just fine?
