topo maps for the red

Post by haas »

Does anyone know which USGS maps I'd want for the Red? I'm looking for a printed map, not topozone.com and I'd like one for the main gorge, as well as one for the Southern region. If there's a better topo then what the USGS puts out, that'd be fine too.

You need the Pomeroyton & Slade quads for the gorge proper and the Zachariah for the So. Region. Unless you really need a hard copy to carry around the quads are all online for free @: http://www.uky.edu/KGS/gis/krgweb/index.html and click on the Irvine area.

thanks captain! That website is great, but I want a hard copy for an educational tool in my classroom. I'll look into those quads though. Is there a better way to order them then off of the USGS website? I hear they can take a loooong time to send them.

Every once in a while you can find topos for sale in outdoor stores. Benchmark in Cols., OH used to carry some. The paper copies are becoming obsolete unfortunately. There used to be a map store here in Cincy that carried a lot of topos or could order them for you. They went out of business. I'm afraid USGS is about the only option these days unless KGS sells them?

Looks like you just might be able to get them from KGS. Give them a call: http://kgsweb.uky.edu/PubsSearching/orderinginfo.asp

I got at least the Slade quad at Benchmark in Cincinnati? Last fall I think; ~$10
Also a place in Louisville stocks them and will ship reasonably but not recalling their name right off - Sorry

You can pick up most KY quads on UK's campus at the Geology building on Rose Street next to the faculty club. Don't know if they do things on-line or over the phone. You can walk in and purchase quads for six bucks a piece. I think this is the same place as the website in Static's post.
I see they are still lopping off mountains in Eastern Kentucky. Electricity isn't cheap.

I stopped in the District offfice for the DBNF in Winchester and picked mine up.
They have a big map on the wall with the names of the quadrants.
Just tell ' em at the counter which ones you want and they'll go in the back and get 'em.

I posted a link from mapquest, but it was one of those that ended up making the post about 15 screens wide.

Search mapquest.com for 1700 Bypass Rd Winchester Ky 40391

It's right across from the Krogers and Popeyes Chicken.

Stanton ranger district office in Stanton has them too. Hwy 15, west of town, across from the high school.
