Learning to climb....

Post by philip171 »

Well I have been climbing for about two years, but the problem is, I cant ever get to go! I think we went maybe 4-5 times this year and thats it. At the start of the season I was able to lead 5.8's with a few problems but able to do it. By the end of the season I can now hardly do a 5.5!! It just doesnt work for me to get into shape and ready to climb, go once then slack off for two months and go back out. So I get worse and not better by doing this. I can drive now, and I was hopping I could start going to a gym since I could drive my self, but looks like there are none now! I also non of my friends climb or want to get into it. Would I be best to bolder? Or would it not be the best idea to go alone? I will deffnetly be going to the via ferrata when it opens back up.
Well any advice would be great!

from one philip to another (that really has nothing to do with it) nevermind, startover.

ok. where do you live? from the sounds of it Lexington. if thats the case you are in pretty good shape b/c the red is so damned close. lots of people start climbing in gyms but its not necessary at all. get in shape over winter doing whatever and then just go down to the red starting in spring every weekend. you'll lose all your friends back home cause you'll never see them but who cares cause you'll be climbing.

1: Learn to spell

2: Get new friends that climb

3: Get in good general physical shape over the winter, running, biking, hiking etc.

4: Get a hang/trainingboard and use it. Metolius has a nice how to use me at: http://www.metoliusclimbing.com/howto-s ... -train.htm

5: Go to the red every weekend and climb

6: Don't two roll
Screw you guys. I'm going bowling.

Can you work on endurance & strength now & when spring comes get down to the red? Or if you able to drive now...take your butt to Cincy or Louisville every other weekend & hit the gyms. There is always a way.

Good luck!

I would advise agaisnt a hangboard espcially if you dont climb regularly....i am sure there are a bunch of facinating oppinions if you do a search on this forum.

Why does everyone say to wait until the spring to climb outside?

Get outside whenever the weather is below your tolerance....I wouldnt limit myself to climb only durning certain seasons.

on second thought....everyone should stay at home on the nice days and only climb durning their designated pre-determind season
