if you are planning on going on to trad later I'd get a larger rope now. these little string in the 9.x range don't really have the buchness to handle edges and other things you will encounter on trad

go for a beefy 10.5

remember your rope is the one thing that is not backed up, why risk it if you don't have to

plus bigger ropes last longer!

and for all of you
oh-gees-that-rope-is-too-heavy types, go in the gym for like 2 days, boom not heavy anymore

I don't think the Trango has actually been released from R&D yet. It should be on the market before too much longer.

I'm a big fan of stick clipping and keeping my ankles the way they are now.

Just give me your money and I'll take care of buying the proper stuff for you, diggum.

I wouldn't buy any 'biners that have a notch type gate on them. They can be a royal pain to unclip from a hanger or from your harness once you get to working steeper routes and hangdogging. You might want to look at ball-notched wire gates or Petzl Spirits (at least for the top biner).

Go to the hardware store and get a couple of those screw link 'biner-esque things just in case you get halfway up a route and have to bail. It'll save you a quickdraw so... uh, that may save you $10 or so. Always stuff some shopping bags into a side pocket of your pack to cart out garbage. Be sure to pack a towel. You'll want to wipe off the sweat so you don't get a chill. Also, if you just buy a hard hat instead of a climbing helmet you'll save at least $50 and it'll look better with your American flag and pot leaf stickers.
