Bottom line.... If you leave shit out so that it can get stolen you are an idiot.

'Darling, may I please be excused for a moment?
I have to shake hands with a very dear friend of mine, whom I hope to introduce you to after dinner.'
The polite way to excuse yourself and take a piss.

I have a device I use at the bottom of some multi pitch routes on areas where I don't know many people. I also use it in my vehicle. It's a stainless steel mesh net that goes over my pack and can be cabled to trees, frames, etc. It's called a pacsafe and costs a little bit (around 50 or so i forget) really a person with a good pair of cutters could disable the whole thing so it basically just keeps out the more honest of the thieves.
We have people at my gym who steal fairly often, mostly kids. But I never bring a wallet or anything worth much in with me.
Miguel's situation has always impressed me by the integrity of the climbers there, I've had forgotton gear: shoes, chalk bag etc. dropped off there before and thought whoever did that was pretty cool.
People are basically good.
