The 'no moving parts' statement is strong, but the 'no disabled autoblock during any reasonable SOP' statement is WAY stronger. This argument seems so crystal clear to me that I wonder about the survival of the Grigri - Cinch - Eddy - Sum old-time religion. I also am amazed about the people that 'pee' when they fall :D who apparently do not welcome the disappearance of this flicker in their window of safety while climbing. I fear the prophecy that pride cometh before the fall, but I simply have to follow the dictates of logic.

OK, in all seriousness. Whatever device the belayer can and will operate safely. Back before the assisted belay devices existed I saw absolutely horrible technique displayed in operating simple devices like belay plates. The basic problem was people letting go of the rope with their brake hand, something that is never acceptable when using a plate, tube, or ATC. If you happened to point out the error people always got defensive, "I only had my hand off for a second" was the usual response. If everyone would just strive to practice impeccable technique there would be far fewer accidents. The odds of that happening are abysmally low.

It is sad, Mr. Day, that in all your years of experience that you have seen little change in people. That is the human condition that sucks too. For all those that will adapt, like Caribe, or all those that will be vigilant and prepared, like yourself, there are three times the fools. I guess both Darwin and Soloman were right. The weak will not survive and pride will come before destruction.
