Navigation is the hardest part of an adventure race. You gotta know how to read a topo map and navigate with a compass. I tell people there are two things you need to be able and willing to do if you want to try an adventure race. Bushwhack through briers, poison ivy, stinging nettles, etc, etc and ride a mt biking on a single track trail.

You can ALWAYS get there that-away...if you're willing to sacrifice a shoe every now and then to the God of Mucky Swamp Bottoms or give a little blood to the Briar Gods.
Infiterra Spring Fury is this weekend. I've got a team, so I'm good there, but I still have room in the car if anyone wants to go up just to see the race. You could volunteer, Infiterra gives race credit for future races if you wish to do that, and volunteering is the best way to see how the races work out and such. Or you could do their shorter version of the race (8 hours) just to get your feet wet. We're heading up through Lexington and Cincinnati if anyone wants to join us.

Planet Adventure holds races in Indiana, often in southern Indiana. They have great races from beginner to 36 hour races.

Volunteering is the best way to see what it's all about and you learn a lot that will help you race smarter.
Learning orienteering will help significantly with the navigation part of racing. Louisville has an O club. There are also clubs in Ohio and Central Indiana.
