Mallorca Beta

Post by endercore »

Just bought my tickets (£40 round trip!) for an April trip to Mallorca. Anyone have good beta about cheap places to stay/booze/hang out? Also looking for some good recommended long and easy sport routes to get on during the day when I'm not to busy enjoying actually seeing the sun.

anyone been? Thanks,
Scott

Budget Airlines are great Shamis... www.Ryanair.co.uk Not really sure why we've never been to make a low-cost budget airline work domestically in the US. And Pigsteak- Mallorca is eastern eastern kentucky-- its near that secret lake crag pictured on the back of the RRG guide book.

It's been about eight years, but when I was there for a few weeks I stayed at a hostel in Palma that was partially paid for by the Spanish Government. At the time it was eight bucks a night. The room I stayed in had two bunks and a bathroom. The hostel was located east of downtown about four or five miles, a couple of blocks from the beach. That part of town is almost like a small piece of transplanted Germany (lots of large German tourists); if I remember correctly some of the streets even have German names. Sorry, I can't remember more.

If you get a chance check out the Castle on top of the crag at Alaro. There use to be rustic hostel by the remains of the Castle.

Hey Scott,
its been awhile since your original post but if you're still looking:

Cala Millor is a pretty sizable town with lots of cheap hotels and plenty of places to eat, drink, dance, whatever, and is right on the edge of the DWS crags. You just drive a little south and its DWS all the way down the coast. That said, Porto Cristo is right next to the crags, but we never could find anything cheap there that looked cool. Plus, there is much less to do in PC than Call Millor. But you could walk to bad ass DWS. Your call. Kayak.com is your friend.

As far as sport climbing goes, Alaro and Tijuana will have everything you need for at least 2 weeks or however long you're going. Both have sun and shade. Alaro will be ok if it rains, Tijuana, not so much. Tijuana has easier access and a better view (es Pontas, the coast etc.) but Alaro has the best climbing. There are some other crags in the north that are pretty good but I forget their names.

This is probably my favorite climbing place EVER. Even though April isn't the best month to go there (water still cold, probably rain), you're going to have a great time. Be sure to check out Cala Varques, and Cala Sa Nau. And look around at those places, there is lots more to be found than is in the guidebook.

Buy a small inflatable boat. Have a great time. There's your beta.

ah cheers for the beta frank. Will probably spend some time in Palma - head to the mts of the north and then maybe head down to check those crags out. Its so cheap so possible a DWS trip will have to be in the works this summer
