Homebrew

Post by Alan Evil »

I've been brewing my own beer lately. Anyone else do this?

I'm kind of fond of the lighter beers like ale, kolsch, pilsner, and the like. I've found they have to sit in the bottle for at least four weeks before they're ready to drink which is a kind of agony.

Oh yeah man, I just got a new kit for Christmas. I'm super stoked about trying to figure it all out. Personally, I like the dark stuff... but its all beer right? The kit I got has all the ingredients for a lager so its a pretty long waiting game too it sounds like. (a couple months for "full maturity") Im getting pretty pumped about playing with recipes in the future. Whats your secret for keeping the temps all kosher for the brewing process?

I have done it before, and I only remember it taking 2 weeks (also agony). The self sealing, reusable bottles are helpful like Grolsch. And don't add too much sugar! Made that mistake once, and about 3 out of 4 beers would explode when opened, sometimes discharging the entire bottle as high as the ceiling! whoops!

I've been brewing for about ten years. Nothing too advanced. Ales are easier to do since you don't need a cool place to "lager" the beer. They also take less time. I'm brewing a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale clone this weekend.

I brew regularly (6-10 batches / year). 1,2,3 is common for the process. 1 week ferment, 2 weeks secondary (clarifying, aging), 3 weeks carbonating.

If you go to kegging, however (and it is awesome, btw) carbonation can be done in a day.

After taking a break since moving here, I've recently been getting the homebrew bug again...

Does anybody have any spare carboys they're willing to part with? I'm willing to buy or trade, let me know what you might have...
