Hey all. Just got a pair of metoulious rock rings from the REI garage sale for about $5. Winters are long and cold in Michigan, so climbing outside year round isn't much of an option.
I'm kind of lost on how to mount these so they can hang properly.
What's the best way?
I'm in an apartment, but our landlord is fine with drilling holes and what not. However, our space is really old and stud-finders are kind of useless. I've used a few of them and they all seem to think that studs are either everywhere, or nowhere.
Should I just try to get a pull up bar and drill it into the door frame and then hang the rock rings from that?
I understand the best way to use the rock rings is for them to hang freely.
Thanks for the advice in advance.

unless you have really tall doorways i would say no but a last ditch effort nonetheless. do you have plaster ceilings?? if you have a deck you can always hang them from that.
to find the stud, straighten out a coat hanger and drill a small hole, 1/4" or less in the area you would like the rings to be in. be sure its not near a light fixture. stick the coat hanger into the hole while bending it any way to keep it flat against the ceiling. use this as a "cane" to feel where the rafters are. you might need a bigger hole just experiment. once you find the suds you can either drill two big rings in and then clip the rock rings to that or screw a 2x4/2x6 whatever between the two studs to spread out the load. the first way should work fine enough.
oh yeah, keep your ass in michigan.
