Lions Head Ontario

Post by bhuff04 »

Trying to plan out a trip for next month and heard this place was pretty rad. Anyone know how good the climbing is or if its comparable to anything on the east coast? Also, how's the camping scene/restraunts?

The climbing there is quite unique and fun. It's been since the early 90's since I was there, but It was quite an experience. You end up rapping into the climbs so it can be a bit interesting finding the routes at first.

We camped at the municipal campground on the lake shore in the Village of Lions Head (very affordable) and Showers/Toilet facilities were available. There is also a grocery and some decent restaurants.

There is other climbing around the area as well that is worth visiting. If I remember right it is on an Indian reservation? Not sure. Anybody know the name?

I love Lion's Head - but it's an overall thing - the rap-in-climb-out is more fun adventure climbing rather than somewhere to really push yourself.

Using the search function I came up with these threads:

For the most part, they're pretty informative.

(As for Snyd's comment about the hanging belays being replaced with trails at the bottom - that only counts if you're Sonnie Trotter!)

i found the limestone was difficult for me since i'd only climbed on sandstone - very slick and hard for me to find feet. i climbed about 2 grades lower there - but it was lotsa fun. we climbed with a friend-of-a-friend who was a local and that was helpful as it's really hard to tell from the top of the wall which route you're rapping down to.

oh - and i saw another local take full-body mosquito netting out of his pack. when i asked him about it he said it was for the summer when he belays  just as an FYI.
