you're missing the entire point. look, you live every day of your own life. you make choices, which you are completely free to make. however, choices have consequences, both those that you recognize and those that you don't (because they either don't affect you directly or are too seemingly disconnected). not recognizing those consequences is ignorance and trying to justify those consequences is at best a willing delusion. justifying a position from a relative stance doesn't do much; you're still admitting that what you're doing isn't necessarily good.. it's just not as bad as another situation. again, my only question: is soloing on private land doing anything to help us maintaining access now or gain it in the future? muir valley and torrent would be great examples..

Well, I just went through and read nearly that entire thread. Theres nothing even close to the accusations made here. Frankly, maybe only 4 or 5 pages deal with the backflip at all, and in a pretty tame way.

Soloing doesn't do anything to help.... but neither does roped climbing. I'm not sure I see your point with this...

Again, it is my understanding that the landowner has the same amount of exposure regardless if the person is soloing, leading, tr, or just walking up the trail. The KY recreational use statutes do not say "soloing is bad", they just say the landowner is not responsable for what happens to people recreating on thier land. Period. If someone was to get hurt soloing, leading, or walking on the trail they can sue. Hell you could sue for getting your ego crushed there if you wanted, but the odds of winning a lawsuit from a soloing injury are the same as for a hiking injury, that is, slim to none.

And for the other stuff, it does seem to me that Greg is catching a lot of crap that he really isn't due. Soloing 5.13 is bad ass, period. And, if I were to ever do any kind of meaningful solo, I would probably have someone with a camera there, and would have no problem posting photos of it here. As a photographer, if Greg asked me to shoot him soloing Bohica, I would.

But, some of the points made here are worthy of thought, and some of the people saying things are worthy of respect and paying attention to what they say, even if you do not agree.

exactly, even if you do not agree. and as for legal exposure, i think you're probably right.. but i'm not thinking in those terms. i just think people wouldn't want to have people doing something so risky on their land.

and again, about roped vs. unroped: it's perception, not necesssarily the reality of the situation. like i said several posts ago, i think gumbies being unsafe are just as bad for access. like i hope for greg, i'd hope they'd do something about it to make themselves at least appear safer.. or just keep it off the radar.

i still say it's the perception of safety. talk to people and they're always like, "well what if you fall!?" and then you explain about the rope and stuff and they calm down. try doing that while explaining a solo and they always say, "are they crazy?!" or "they must have some kind of deathwish.." ..perception..
