I'm a climbing addict. there is no "can't climb" for me.
I broke my finger at work and climbed after 2 days. i just splinted the finger and used the rest of the good ones to climb with.(that lasted all of 2-1/2 weeks until i could put weight on the finger again) I took almost a week off when i sprained my ankle, but after that i couldn't handle it anymore and just taped the hell out of the ankle and headed for the gym. The footwork wasn't so hot for a couple weeks, but i still climbed.

I can't get outside weekly(i live in Michigan, land of no rock), but I do as often as i can afford to drive somewhere. And I'm lucky enough to have a really nice gym to train at when i can't get outside. I usually climb 2-3 days a week, injured or not.

I second bigred:
I know for a scientific fact that if I don't climb at least once or twice a week I become very harsh dude. My body,mind and spirit need it, like air.
Hope your foot gets better soon. Do what you gotta do to cope and recover fully (emphasis on the recover part) Get well soon!

Ray, I'm working on 8 weeks now with a broken ankle and I'm about to crawl out of my f-ing skin. Not about climbing necessarily although I would love to be out there. I haven't been able to do anything, aside from mowing the yard while hopping on one foot. What kinda foot injury?

Aw man, that sucks! Be careful hopping around a lawnmower. Mine doesn't sound so bad anymore. I'm not sure what's up with it although some people have given me some long descriptive medical terms about what the issue might be. Basically when I push hard off of my left foot it feels like someone is shoving a screwdriver through it.

Must get outside at least once a week? No way. I started/discovered climbing later in my life. By the time I decided that this is one of the coolest things I've ever done, my life was already full (family, home, career). It was hard enough to find one day a week to get to the gym. After a couple of years I had made it up to 3 times a week in the gym (as my spouse said it improved my mood) and started getting outside. Then I broke my foot (whilst climbing) and was out for 4 months. At first it sucked to not climb, but not as much as not being able to do lots of other things freely. I just had to redirect to things I could do and wait, knowing that my body is appreciating the rest and recouperation. I knew I'd be back and that I would eventually become stronger. It was nice to not worry about when the next I might get to climb would be, and also gave me something to look forward to in the future.

Life is big, there's so much out there that I think it's healthy to step away from things every once in awhile and gain some perspective and appreciation.

But to answer the question: I don't freak if I can't climb, though I might get annoyed if I miss a beautiful weekend because of chores (chasing kids, house/yard work, anything else that doesn't necessarily translate to something fun) or it's not my weekend to get out. But, there's always something to keep my interest around the next corner.

I'm able to get some studying done. Grad exams are in early Sept.

What I hate is not knowing how long it will take to heal.

climb thru the pain...studying, women, biking, kids, yardwork, a real life....those are all rubbish.

quit making excuses for not meeting your climbing goals.
