Happy B-Day Ale-8-One
Ale-8-One just turned 80 years old. I attended their birthday party today and took a tour of the plant. The coolest part to me is how the owner and the son, the only ones who know the secret formula, lock themselves in a room every couple of weeks and mix up a super concentrated syrup. 200 ml of this syrup will make almost 4,000 bottles. Anyways, they give tours on Fridays with a reservation and I thought it would be cool to get together a group tour sometime. After the tour they have a company store with Ale-8 shirts, hats, & other logo knick knacks.

Ale-8-One really doesn't have that much caffeine:

It's funny how everyone "knows" Ale-8 has a lot of caffeine. Even I was surprised when I saw that chart in the Co-Op a couple of years ago. It must be the combination of the ginger and sugar that provides the kick.

Pulled this off another page:
Health Benefits
Historically, ginger has a long tradition of being very effective in alleviating symptoms of gastrointestinal distress. In herbal medicine, ginger is regarded as an excellent carminative (a substance which promotes the elimination of intestinal gas) and intestinal spasmolytic (a substance which relaxes and soothes the intestinal tract). Modern scientific research has revealed that ginger possesses numerous therapeutic properties including antioxidant effects, an ability to inhibit the formation of inflammatory compounds, and direct anti-inflammatory effects.
Gastrointestinal Relief
A clue to ginger's success in eliminating gastrointestinal distress is offered by recent double-blind studies, which have demonstrated that ginger is very effective in preventing the symptoms of motion sickness, especially seasickness. In fact, in one study, ginger was shown to be far superior to Dramamine, a commonly used over-the-counter and prescription drug for motion sickness. Ginger reduces all symptoms associated with motion sickness including dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and cold sweating.

Next time you are at HP40 (I don't know where else in the south it might be sold), try Buffalo Rock Ginger Ale. It's Mike's favorite and he convinced us to try it. It has a hell of a bite to it and is less sweet than Ale-8. Jennifer loved it so much she bought 4 cases to ration till fall.
