Merrick, great job on the article and I especially enjoyed the insight into the "local color" also noticed the ad in the back for the No Permanent Address video, I was digging it at the Climbers that Care event but had to bail around Indian Creek, whats the name of the boulder in Central Park? Are you hanging out with Johnny Damon?

Thanks Crankmas,

Yea you should definately check out the rest of No Permanent Address. it actually has a storyline and goes somewhere.

The boulder in central park that you are thinking of is probably Rat Rock but there is a large amount of bouldering in the parks in the city.
Here are some shots from my first time there a few years back:

for more info on Central Park check out:

I haven't met Johnny Damon yet but I have only been here a few weeks and there are a lot of people in the city.

merrick wrote: i might go see what you get for 50 bucks. I hear that ivan and vadim set great hard routes that no one climbs and that there is no bouldering. Interestingly that gym is not the most expensive in the city. there are some that you have to get a membership to and it costs over 2000 a year annually.
I would be surprised if there were no bouldering there since a)Ivan is the bouldering extradordinaire and b)Chelsea has a nice bouldering wall about 15ft tall opposite of the climbing wall that spans almost the same 'width' of the climbing wall (fairly long). Its definitely got the nicest wall in NYC, what place charges $2k/year? Are you talking about just a regular fitness gym?

I was able to climb at Chelsea twice while I was there while avoiding the $50 fee. They occasionally give out guest passes, so try getting on their email list and maybe you'll get lucky once a year. I think members can also give out guest passes, where maybe you only have to pay $25 or something. The best annual opportunity to climb there is during the Annual Chelsea Piers Climbing Comp. The $25 entry fee is worth it to go climb there and have a good time during the comp. And they usually give out a free 1-day guest pass to all the participants too (atleast they did the year I went). And you might see Kentucky Pete there too, if not you'll probably run into him eventually. Just a few tips for the 'normal' nyc climber who can't afford insane rates.
