Grand Ledge, Michigan

Post by FujManiac »

anyone been climbing in Grand Ledge, MI? Looking at the website, it looks like there is a ton of climbing (toproping only), but some people say it's not that great and there aren't many climbs there.
So what's the scoop?

It is not that great. If you are within an hour of Grand ledge, it may be worth stopping by for an afternoon, otherwise, just head over to planet rock. There are quite a few routes, but only a couple are worth climbing.

If you go, bring webbing and a carpet (to protect the top of the cliff) to set up top ropes. There is only toprope climbing.

Damn...I climbed at the Ledges a lot 1978-1982 or 3....

The decent section of GL is only a quarter mile or less in length..Not particularly good stone. Choss really. If it was located in the Red it would have been quarried out years ago for road shingle, but it's all Michigan has to offer.

Top ropes only and it I would suspect that it gets crowded on the weekends.

It was nicer wayback before the hordes wore it out. I've got an old guide for it ( 1974 ) around here somewhere...

It's all lower michigan has to offer. I grew up climbing there and you may find it worth your while to stop. It's just top roping and the rock can get pretty brittle. When it gets crowded it sucks, but there's quite a few climbs for being such a small area. Check out "Doug's Roof". If you have any other questions feel free.

Exactly. But what's up with da Uoop? I can't believe that there is zero climbing up there (other than ice)! Bouldering? Trad? Nothing?
