True North Outfitters

I had the occasion to meet Chris from True North the other day and use their services as a shuttle. Not only were they convenient they were very pleasant.

Their shuttle service (boat) saved me a tank of gas in an old truck ($50 round trip to the Red)!

we traveled down the middle part of the Red River on a rainy Monday afternoon. We transferred the boat to their rig at TNO and shuttled to the metal bridge near Nada Tunnel and put in at the old concrete Bridge by the parking area for WOD...

The float took 2 hours to do. There were a few snags and streamers but not too bad...

I was amazed at the lack of wildlife on that river. Plenty of birds but not much else. only saw one otter/muskrat hole in the 6 or so miles...

I saw a dead deer in it last fall... it had that gnarly blue tongue disease.... icky and sad.

I've seen 2 dead dear this year hiking in the red, I hadn't heard of that disease. Damn...

If it's Chris Hayes you're talking about then he's a pretty cool guy.

I had the privilege of teaching with him at last year's Muir Valley climbing camp.

i just wanted to bump this thread and say what a pleasure it has been staying at true north (with the exception of listening to goodguy blab on and on and on about himself all night long

)

seriously, though...kudos to jeff and chris and susan (i think is her name). they treated me so well on friday night that i thought about not going home. i bought one of susan's cool hats and supper and breakfast were great. and chris even had the coffee ready before i got downstairs.

if you are old (like me) and don't feel like dealing with the miguels scene...give true north a spin.

man, i've been way tempted to stay there a few times now. our typically crazy late arrival (normally around 1 or 2am) has always given me pause.

It's been pretty hit-or-miss with that. We've tried 'reservations' only to find that they had 'miscounted' and were full by the time we got there. The open room hostel thing isn't my ideal situation, but the breakfast is really good.
