climbing closures due to hunting?

Post by christieizzo »

Hello!

I've never been to the Red River Gorge, and am planning a trip for mid April. A friend of mine mentioned that there are closures for climbing because it's hunting season? Is this true? Does anyone have any more info, such as, how much of the Gorge is closed, etc? I'm really excited to go, but if access will be very limited week of April 14-19 then I may reconsider.

Thanks!
Chris

Well first of all....the red sucks and almost everything is closed. The hunters actually bought all the land.

Honestly, There are some areas of the gorge that are closed, Torrent Falls would be the most recent, chimney top, parts of Dip wall, Various places in the southern region the Charmane oil company occupies....Actually, come to think of it.... a lot of shit here is closed. Don't bother.

oh shit man- april 14-19?

thats like the one week no one is allowed to climb in the gorge. They have this big annual spring redneck convention where they off road down all off our trials and shoot up everything. The next weekend is miserable to 'cause there is all kinds torn up trails and beer cans everywhere. I can't believe the forest service lets those guys do all that stuff-- its so bad for the land.

you'll be fine. There are tons of crags that are still open.

There are no closures for hunting. The climbs and crags that are closed are for other reasons.
Here is a (partial) list:

Crags,

Arena Wall
Oil Crack Crag
Pocket Wall
Chimney Rock
Torrent Falls

Climbs, (To many to list, so here are crags w/ some closures)

Hen's Nest
Dip Wall
Tower Rock
Military Wall

This may sound like alot, but it is not. There are still over 1700 climbs listed
on the online guide.
Hope you have fun.

LOL Ok to the OP...I was joking. Yes there are some closures but none do to hunting...although you will hear random firing in the distance in some places. The red is the best climbing area on the planet.

Have fun.

pat, you are just bitter cause you have been stuck in crappy WV for the past 2 years :) dont hate!

The only place i have ever heard gunshots is out at dip wall, and that is WAAAAY out there. I'd say you should be fine :) but you can bring a bright orange vest just in case :) it will look hot with a harness!
