when i started climbing a handful of years ago i figured i could drive from indy to the red and back for 40 bucks - 50 bucks would get me pizza and breakfast sandwiches.
how have things changed for you - especially all you folks from michigan, chicago,
how has the cost of gas changed your availability to climb in the red

We've had to start leaving our camper up at the Red each season and then drive my honda civic instead of the truck to save on gas from Atlanta. It kind of sucks because the truck has 4 wheel drive, which makes certain crags a lot easier to get to. Plus, I have a dog that I don't want in my car!
It costs us about $350-$400 in gas if we drive the truck each weekend, about $200 for gas with the civic. Add $30/weekend for camping, and about $60 for two nights of pizza from Miguel's and food on the drive up and back. So....we're up to about $300-$500 per weekend to climb Fri, Sat, Sun.
Even in dire straits, I refuse to make friends to offset the cost. It's a LONG drive from Atlanta!

Thats a lot of money! i wont drive my four wheel drive anymore probably. its parked now and was pretty much until the last snow. I used to be able to get in a wed pm workout in late april/may after work if I drove fast enough, come back on the weekend, eat at Miguels, etc all for around 100 or so per week. Not anymore. The friend thing is a kind thought but - my friends wont chip in for gas or hand you some pizza and say thats their gas contribution - so i havent been down and probably wont much this summer.

I'm negotiating Saturday work in Beattyville to pay for my gas and food for Sunday climbing this summer.
I hope I still have friends up there!
