Old School Cams.

Post by Jay »

I've had these cams for a really long time, and wanted to know if anyone had any info about them. They were made by ABC, and are marked ANDE ITALY. The smallest is a little smaller than a #2 Metolius, and the largest is a little larger than a #4. I bought them used (yes, I know...) in 1993 or 1994, and I have no idea how old they were when I got them. For the record, I no longer climb on them, but the smallest one does hang from my rear view mirror.

No kidding, they look almost new.

You seem to know quite a bit about them. I've had 4 ABC's since 1990. Bought them new. Work fine, still using them. The only trouble I've had is that the cable stem tends to kink if you fall on them when in a hoizontal. Bent them back and used them. Cables haven't frayed, slings good. Like most things old means better quality. Climb-Safe.

Honestly, they kind of scare me. There's no marking indicating weight rating, the action is crap-tastic, and they frankly look like something a high schooler made in shop class right before he started his bong project...

I'd use those without a second thought. At least your slings weren't pissed on and half eaten by mice!

They don't look bad at all, but crap-tastic action is not good. If the action is "sticky" I'd be concerned about holding power. See if cleaning them up restores the action. If they never were smooth, you might just want to permanently retire them.
