I-64 Project to Start Saturday, Detour Traffic
FRANKFORT, Ky. (November 30, 2007) – Maintenance work on the I-64 twin bridges crossing the Kentucky River in Franklin County will continue this weekend, and will begin sooner than previously anticipated. Due to the probability of rain on Sunday, the contractor will begin work on Saturday. Traffic is expected to be affected as early as 9:00 a.m. Saturday, December 1st. Motorists may want to find alternate routes or adjust their travel plans.
The project involves the replacement of expansion joints at the east end of the two bridges. These joints provide for the expansion and contraction of the bridge where the deck and roadway meet. Repairs were completed on the eastbound bridge November 15th. Work crews will now focus on the westbound lanes.
The average daily traffic count along this portion of I-64 is 41,400 vehicles; 19% of which is truck traffic. Vehicles wider than 12 feet will be required to detour during the project. The official detour route follows US-60 at exit 58, to KY-676 (the East-West Connector), to US-127, to the on-ramp of I-64 at exit 53 (and vice-versa).
