Is this Jeremy?

Wes, you took the pic, right?
Fark.com photoshop thread...
Yep, Jeremy and my photo, used without permission. I really hate it when people alter my work, without my permission, or even asking. I sent them a note to take it down. I really should just take down all my galleries, as people are always cross linking, or using them without asking, or even giving credit. Sucks, but maybe it is what needs to happen at this point. To those of you that do give credit and thanks, and even a beer or something, I am grateful.

That sucks. You can prevent cross-linking by configuring your webserver - even have a list of sites that are allowed to link (like redriverclimbing.com) but reject everyone else. A lot of news sites do this.Wes wrote:I really should just take down all my galleries, as people are always cross linking, or using them without asking, or even giving credit.
If they wanted a good climbing photo for a photoshop thread they could have just gone through Flickr and grabbed a Creative Commons one. There are plenty out there. One of my photos was used without permission in the same way - it was on Flickr and I retained the copyright. They took it anyway.
I gave a church permission to present one of my plays a few years ago. One of the guys took ungranted liberty and changed several lines. I felt like my child had been kidnapped and returned with a personality change.
I imagine it was a little unnerving to have his ass chewed in a church!
That sucks, Wes. Great photo, by the way!

What I love about running is you can meditate while running. It's a peaceful place.

Yeah, but pretty much unless it is in a flash file it is easy to grab the images and just post somewhere else. In a kinda way this is just growing pains - I started out taking photos of friends climbing and just giving them the files, then I started getting a little bit better and asked for credit. And with an exception or two, that worked pretty well. I have even been paying $100.00 a year for a smugmug site so they could get prints / high res files . I guess the next step is just not giving stuff out at all unless it is a paid job, or putting into flash galleries (a pain in the ass) or something. But, that is just the way it is, I guess.

One the one hand, I totally support your right to control the use of your work. If you say take it down, they should honor that request.
On the other hand, where's the harm? Did you get Linkin Park's written permission to use the quote in your sig? (can they write?) Maybe they're sitting around griping that the lines you quoted are likely to be misinterpreted out of the context of the rest of the words and sounds of the song?
But more realistically, it's no big deal. Linkin Park exist to whine, but, really, they don't have crap to complain about with your sig. They said it, you quoted that excerpt and they aren't harmed. I think the main harm you suffer in that fark thread in that they should say "check out this cool shot by Wes, who's a really good photographer. you can check out his stuff at..." In other words, you should be credited and there should be a link to your site where you could make some money. Of course, a lot of the edits are crap, but a few are really funny!
If you want to get philosophical, there is no 'original' art. We all borrow and steal from each other to create 'new' work. That's the paradox of the digital age. On the one hand, we can see and learn from other artists like never before. But at the same time, there is the urge (and the tools) to lock up so much of the work out there and take away the stream of ideas that we all build from.

Bacon is meat candy.
This is sorta it, though not so much the money thing. More about the credit and the fact that I really, really don't like it when people alter my work. I did give LP credit for the lyrics, and I am not making money with page hits to this site, as fark is, using my work. As was noted, there are many, many photo, lyrics, etc. released under the CC, so they could have and should have used one of those.
Do you release the stuff you do for free, without credit, so that others can make money from your work while altering it however they want?
I know I posted things on the net, so I shouldn't be at all surprised if they get used in a way that I didn't intend. You do sorta loose control of any content posted. So, I did remove my knowchaos.com galleries. And while I still have some on my new site, those will get converted to flash pretty soon as well.

If you want credit for the photos, watermark them. If I was a serious photographer I would watermark a small portion of the image if it was to be published on the internet with my name and website. That way, the more people who view the image, the better. I'm not sure taking down your galleries or converting them to Flash slideshows will help any - even the Fark photoshop thread had your name and website in the comments pretty quickly. You have some great photos, any exposure you get can't be bad. Maybe check your referrer logs to see how many hits you are getting from that one single thread - I bet it's lots.
To be big enough where they are not easy to just crop off, watermarks tend to be distractive. Or at least to me. But, it is probably a good idea anyway, though I would much rather that people would give the a four word credit, since it isn't all that hard to do.
Truthfully, this is just growing pain stuff - I have been planning on taking down those galleries for a while now, this just helps me do it quicker and with less regret. I am starting to do some stock stuff now, and it isn't good to have images you are selling floating around the internet for free.
And pages hits and exposure are nice and all, but I would rather it not be from something like this! Plus, and I don't know how he feels about it, but since it is Jeremy then I feel much less kind to the people doing the edits and all.
