Is this Thing 2?

Post by p0bray01 »

My girlfriend and I were at Dip Wall and found this kinda grungy route...no chalk or any signs of travel in a while...very friable....I prob broke off about 15 or so holds on lead... Had big holds at the beginning, went into a squeeze chimney to awkward right leaning offwidth kinda onto a slab....the traversed left and used some trees for pro and then topped out......Just wondering if I did an accidental FA (I doubt it) or if this was Thing 2? In the guidebook this route is not mentioned but on here The description of Thing 2 resembles it...but I can't remember what was around it...It was more offwidth than chimney...or it could be I am fat....Just curious. If so I will post some additional pics in the online guidebook. Thanks!

Ok....... I can't figure out how to post the pic...if someone can help...let me know and I will post it.

Sounds like Thing one or two. one of then was 5.7 ish and the other 5.9ish. I remember topping out on a slab with little pro and a great view of Jazz rock.
I put up one of them and Pete the other. I recall a cool traverse right to an established route to get down on Pete's route. They were both kinda wide. I did a chest jam somewhere to get a rest. Then out on the face. Looks like they both got an 8 and end on the ledge in the descriptions. Likely that we felt the slab wasn't worth it. been a while since I have been to Dip. There's lots of stuff there, some good and some not so good, but don't miss Green Eggs and Ham.

Oh man, when Pete was putting up his route he starts tossing dried leaves out of the crack with both hands, digging like a dog does. My eyes were so full of dirt and leaves I could barely see but I didn't want to take my eyes off him in case he fell.
I started bringing sunglasses along after that day.

yeah the first of this route was really easy...just everytime I lunged for a ginormous jug..the damn thing would break! LOL And there were MANY leaves in the crack and I dug too like a dog...Actually covered up my #4 below me.

I don't remember breaking many holds, but the route gets no traffic so it's par for the course. I believe we thought ending the route on that first ledge was prudent since there was a rap tree close ,to the left. There's lots of greenbriars around it. We cut some but they grow right back. Maybe Huggy will check in and we will see what he recalls.

hmmm....Lets see. THinking about 6 years back, I think...

I don't recall either route that we did had seriously nasty rock, other than a little bit of crumblyness, no big holds breaking, and both had 20-30 foot sections of full on chimney. Thing 1 started as a fist crack, then widened up. Thing 1 was left of Logic and proportion. Thing 2, I think, was near chicken head or no head. Lots of leaves in Thing 2. I'm not sure, Shit, I don't even know if I could recall with pictures!

I don't remember stuff breaking either. We always tested the holds just in case.
Ive been on some other stuff that only me and John ever did that suffered from the crumblies. Just pick a no star route at a crag and climb it,then look it up on here and there will be John's name as the only one to send it.

Funny! Well....I can't figue out how to post a pic in this forum but I will try and post one under thing 2.,...cause there leaves in the crack....not greenbriars around the tree....and there wasn't much of a ledge...more like a lip.....I was standing on and the tree was about head height...then I just climbed anouther oh....10 feet or so to the left to the top out.

It would be funny if that was a first ascent...go figure.

There we go a pic is up....I am 100% sure its not thing 1 because logic and proportion was WAY the other way...like past Cindy Lous Tube...this thing was over by the green eggs and ham area...

Ah, then it was not thing 1 or thing 2. was the first section a fist crack? then it could have been Kris' route.
