I am going to buy a laptop to use for school sometime soon. I'll be storing music and photos, and writing papers.
Originally I had ordered a custom Dell, but my order was cancelled (long story), so today I went to Circuit City to check out some other PC options, and the Mac Store.
I am leaning toward the Mac ProBook, it is the size I need, has all the programs I could dream of, and I enjoy the layout, (also the price is cheaper than the Dell I ordered!) however I am wondering if there are any unexpected problems I should look for when it comes from sending and receiving PC files. I plan on installing Microsoft Word.
Beta appreciated!

I'm not even going to touch the Mac vs PC debate, but I can say I just picked up one of the new Toshiba ultralights. I thought I would hate a 13 inch screen, but after a day or two I adjusted to it just fine. The weight is what sold me at 3lbs. The price was nice too at $850 with 2GB RAM and a Core 2 Duo T5300 (1.7GHz).
at usually half the price of macs, i'd go for the pc. i've abused mine pretty hard-core for several years now and it's still doing fine.
macs are nice, yeah. but unless you're hoping to do something particularly special with them, i find the price very hard to justify. that and i like everything you can do so easily with pcs.
decide what you need first, at least in terms of how you'll be using it. do you need word processing, programming, surfing the net, powerpoints, graphic arts, video processing, etc.? will you be downloading a ton of stuff or are you pretty isolated from downloads and the like?
(before i get blasted, that's not to say you can't do the same with macs.. it's just that pcs are a lot more accessible for customization and tweaking than macs, ie: you need to be a lot better to get into the guts of a mac. in some ways that's good..)
that's my two cents anyway.

Paul, the price difference for *comparable* Mac and PC are actually really pretty close, no where near the double price that you suggest. The only thing is, Apple does not make a super low end laptop. If you compare specs, you will find the Apple machines are very competitive, sometimes, and for some models the Apple machines cost less then an equal PC. And that is just talking hardware, not software, ease of use, less up keep, less need for third party apps that slow things down and cost $$$, etc. Plus Vista sucks.

I have 5 Macs and wouldn't trade any of them for a PC.
I bought a really nice PC a couple of years ago and it ended up being the worlds most expensive email machine. That's all I used it for was to check my email while I was busy doing my real work on my Mac. I gave it away earlier this year...it was barely used.
But, if I did more text and data related work, I might have used it more but I work primarily with graphics.

You know my opinion.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
You have everything already on PC.... why switch when all you do is store photos and music, and write documents?
No reason to spend more money, other than to create more stress for yourself.
Hell, I work constantly manipulating music and photos, and I've had no need whatsoever for a Mac. You just need it for storage....
