This option seems to fit for me these days, "rarely climb during the good temps, why would I climb during the summer?". Usually I would take time off in the heat of the summer and do other stuff. But some summers weren't so bad and when I was in my 20's I was way too psyched about climbing to not climb in the summer. I remember one summer, I switched gears and bouldered indoors and out all summer(at Coopers Rock). When I came back to routes by late Sept I was in great shape! That was the year I finally did Resurection at the lode.

80 degrees is casual- 96 is brutal though I'm sure the folks in Iraq would favor 96 over 112

I took the summer off once when I first started climbing outside and then thought "why?"

It's hot and sweaty and buggy; but I've gotten some decent sends (for me) and the crags are usually empty. It's great for working and learning moves on new projects as I'm not so concerned about on-sites or flashes. I usually have to work a route pretty hard to send (at my limit). The Fall feels great after climbing during the summer.

Also, I can only get out once a month or so due to family, work, old age, whatever (not that anyone here cares) so I try to just keep going all year. Usually end up taking the winter months off from the outdoors when the temps get 'really' low.

I like anti's postal comparison...

Bugs, Humidity, Snakes, and Heat.

I climb all the rest of the year, this includes Jan and Feb, and have spent more than a few summers in the Red at this point. So a few months off when it sucks so I can maybe get in some off season training, or paddle or bike, or just focus on some other friends and some of the stuff I neglect the rest of the year is cool with me.

I really do not like climbing in the summer, and since my life really does include quite a bit of climbing and plenty of other fun things that aren't climbing, I just take it easy til Sept.
