Flying with Gear

So I try to avoid checking baggage when at all possible. Does anyone know what the rules are for carrying on gear? Nothing sharp, but I guess I could bonk someone with a cam or a #12 nut, but other than that I don't see much of a problem.
What do you guys know about flying with gear?
BTW nice to be back on the site, haven't posted in awhile. I've been too busy to listen to SCIN bitching about whatever injustice he's felt today, glad to see he hasn't faulted with that lately.
Peace!

You are supposed to be able to board with tools uner six inches, etc and they say you can bring cams, draws etc but no ropes or slings. I always checked mine anyway to avoid the hassel. some airports are freaky about everything. i only had my gear misplaced once and ended up getting a free trip out of it.

I had my whole trad rack in my carry on without a problem from Indy to JTree a few years ago.

It would be pretty cheap to send Fed Ex or somthing like that. Just put insurance on it, and who knows you maybe able to buy new shit if they lose it.

You should be fine with carring your rack on. If they don't let you; tell them you are going to use that stuff in your Nalgene to blow the plane up!

I checked my pack on to NC.
Everything was fine, though I didn't take my entire rack.
Flying it home, it came off sopping wet, however.
but no damage.

i took some of my gear on a plane to Red Rocks. in my pack was: rope, harness, shoes, atc, biners, slings. the other stuff wouldn't fit and i checked it.
i did NOT take my Gri Gri. A friend of mine recently had plms where the TA wanted to take his Gri Gri bec they thought it was a weapon. That was also on a flight to mexico.

I know this is'nt the answer to your question, but I just got back from red rocks, whole rack, two harnesses, one rope, and a million accessories, checked in, made it both ways no problems/questions. This question has been posed a few times and the only thing I've seen in common, is there is nothing in common, all the carriers have different ideas/rules, I would call them before you decide what to bring/not bring in carry on......
