I took the WFA through IU Outdoor Adventures (if you're willing to travel). Unless things have changed, it's open to non-students, but you pay a higher fee. I think I paid around 150 for a two-day course.

EKU is having a WFR this January... http://www.campusrec.eku.edu/adventure/

Also, check with http://www.landmarklearning.org/

They are the experts in this area. NOLS affiliated and they are the provider for the EKU course coming up. Probably have some offerings in TN, but they are located in west NC, so pretty close!

Backcountry Rescue is associated with WMA, which is also a good provider.

Go with certification through WMI of NOLS, WMA, or SOLO... they are all good and honor eachothers certs.

Wilderness Medical Associates (WMA) is offering a course at Davidson College (near Charlotte, NC) in January. It's actually two courses: the Wilderness Advanced First Aid (WAFA) followed by a WAFA to WFR bridge course, so if you take both you have the WFR.
I did the WAFA there about 2 years ago. Great course with great instructors. One was an ER doc who moonlights as a river guide and the other was a very experienced EMT/fireman. Most of the class was made up of Davidson students from their (rather impressive) outdoor program, but there were a few other "outsiders" as well.
If you're planning on doing both the WAFA and bridge course, make sure that they're actually offering both. I think they ended up cancelling the bridge course the year I was there due to low enrollment.
