Hey, Ray has an offer by a *major* climbing mag to take over this site, and use it as part of their advertising presence. While, he isn't really excited about it, the money is pretty good, and he has been really busy at work, so taking care of this site has sorta turned into a bit more work then he has time for.

He has said he will sell it to me, or a group of us, for half what he was offered, and we would have to buy some hosting space at a tier 3 ISP, which is like $40.00 a month or so. And we would have to take care if it as well, so we need someone that knows php pretty well. Also, if the sale does go through to them, they are talking about really changing the posting rules, so that all the cool, but offensive stuff would be banned.

No doubt. Have you seen the ads on www.rockclimbing.com ? Or even www.supertopo.com ? I think just about every other climbing bbs has ads, and even more rules, since those things seem to go hand in hand.

The cool thing, is we have a chance to keep this little playground to ourselves, we just have to kick in a little bit of cash!

Let's all look at this calmly. Yes, advertising is annoying, but it can be ignored - no big deal.
Would promotion and cross-linking bring yet more traffic to the site, sure. But if the signal to noise ratio goes from the current 1 to 1000 up to 1 to 5000, would we really notice?
The one sticking point would be more strict posting rules. I guess we'll just have to get all our fisting talk out before the takeover is finalized.
Besides, with a real budget and admins who know what they're doing, this swamp of down time and buginess will be drained and recoded!

So Michelle - where will you make Ray take you with his windfall?
